06 June 2007

Robert Meikle is celebrating being the first Greenkeeper in Scotland to successfully complete an ILM SVQ Level 4 in Management at Elmwood College.

Robert joined Crail Golf Course on a 3 year apprenticeship, and made such an impact that upon completion he was kept on as Assistant Greenkeeper. Two years later he was Head Greenkeeper and chose to undertake his ILM Level 4 qualification at Elmwood College.

The course is designed around a teaching programme which gives the student knowledge and understanding of the management principles, with the manager then developing a portfolio of supporting evidence to demonstrate their competence in the work place.

Robert said: ‘The ILM course has been thoroughly enjoyable; it gave me further confidence which is a necessity in carrying out my job. I have learnt a lot more about management and picked up many good ideas and practices. Many of the tasks brought home the importance of routines and systems that are needed in the working day.’

Rick Bond, Head of Management Development at Elmwood College said: ‘The modern golf course manager needs to have a range of skills and the ILM level 4 programme meets these needs. Robert has demonstrated great commitment in continuing to study whilst working in a busy career. I know he will go on to achieve his long term goals.’
