ILM Centres are now responsible for obtaining new Unique Learner Numbers (ULNs) or verifying existing ULNs for all candidates. For your own convenience, we strongly advise that you gather ULNs for your entire cohort before registering them with ILM. This way, ILM is able to ensure your candidates' LARs are updated, minimising the workload for your organisation.
Step 1
Obtain new ULNs for learners or verify existing ULNs
To obtain and/or verify candidates' ULNs, Centres will need to access the LRS and enter the following information for each of their candidates (which you will need to have gathered in advance):
- Given Name
- Family Name
- Date of Birth
- Gender
- Postcode
- Ability to share
- ID Verification Type and Description
This information can be entered for each learner onto the MIAP Portal, or alternatively upoaded as a batch file in either .csv or .xml format. For Centres with a commercial or in-house MI system the data can be communicated directly with the LRS.
MIAP LRS will send Centres their candidates' ULNs; it is then the Centre’s responsibility to pass these numbers on to their candidates.

For more information and assistance on this process, please contact the LRS helpdesk on 0845 6022589, e-mail lrssupport@miap.gov.uk or view the 'Implementation Guide' on the MIAP website http://www.miap.gov.uk/
Step 2
Register your candidates with ILM
Once you have created or verified ULNs for your entire cohort, simply register your candidates with ILM in the usual way, including the ULN where requested.
By following the recommended route and providing ULNs to ILM at the time of registration, Centres avoid having to update Learner Achievement Records for their candidates, as this will be done by ILM.
Alternative route
Centres who do not gather ULNs for candidates prior to registering them with ILM will need to follow the alternative route (which ILM does not advise).
