ILM has combined VRQs and S/NVQs in two new qualification packages, the ILM Level 2 Dual Award in Team Leading and the ILM Level 3 Dual Award in First Line Management. These qualifications provide key advantages to learners, providers and employers, offering a ‘third way’ to achieving and recognising management skills and knowledge.
Learners
In the new Dual Award programme, participants learn how to improve their performance, leading to an internationally recognised ILM professional qualification with full QCF credit and then, by putting what they have learnt into practice, are also able to have their competence recognised by a an S/NVQ. What makes this so attractive is that the assessment they do for their ILM Award can be used to support their assessment of competence, reducing the burden on them whilst enabling them to gain two related but distinct qualifications.
Providers
ILM has developed the new awards to support providers seeking well-rounded programmes for their learners. NVQs are traditionally achieved through demonstrating existing competence while VRQs are arguably more stretching as they involve skill development. These new Dual Awards provide all the advantages of both qualifications plus:
- they attract public funding such as Train to Gain programmes
- they require only one registration fee (15% less than separate registrations)
And for those providers already approved to offer both qualifications there are no additional approval costs in running Dual Awards.
Employers
Employers, like learners, have much to gain from the two new Dual Awards. Staff completing these qualifications will develop key management skills and bring tangible benefits to the workplace through the assessed components of each unit. The access to public funding eg: Train to Gain funding may also provide a boost to those employers with shrinking training budgets.
Further information for providers
-
ILM centres already approved to offer both qualifications (eg ILM Award in Team Leading and ILM S/NVQ in Team Leading) must express an interest in running the Dual Award(s) with their (Quality)Business Manager. ILM will then process their request, adding the approval codes directly to their records
-
ILM centres approved for only one of the qualifications (eg ILM S/NVQ in Team Leading) must request an ‘add-on’ with their (Quality) BusinessManager, this approval will cost £200 but does not require a centre visit. Centres must submit scheme of work and lesson plans for approval by their Quality Manager
-
If a centre is new to both qualifications then the normal approval process will apply
-
ILM has produced exemplars for both Dual Awards, please contact the Customer Service Team for a copy. These will help centres to map S/NVQ and VRQ units and reduce the assessment requirements
