Independent vs External Assessment

ILM provides two types of assessment routes for organisations preparing candidates for ILM’s core management VRQs:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Team Leading
  • Level 3 Award, Certificate and Diploma in First Line Management
  • Level 4 Award in Management
  • Level 5 Award, Certificate and Diploma in Management

Assessed components of each qualification can be Independently Assessed (IA) in-house or Externally Assessed (EA) by ILM. The choice of route will depend on the organisation’s preference and both have key advantages.

Externally Assessed

Where the EA route is selected, one specific piece of each candidate’s work is assessed by ILM’s specially trained team of External Assessors. All other pieces of work are assessed and internally quality assured by the centre, with a sample quality assured by the ILM External Verifier assigned to the centre.

Advantages of EA:

  • Less marking for centre staff to complete
  • Added credibility and confidence through assessment by the ILM’s team of expert assessors
  • Electronic marking available from qualifications at levels 4 and 5, extended to levels 2 and 3 from October 2008

Independently Assessed

Where the IA route is selected, the centre is responsible for marking and internally quality assuring all pieces of work produced by all candidates. Quality assurance by ILM is carried out by through basic sampling by the assigned ILM External Verifier.

Advantages of IA

  • Lower fees for the centre as work is being carried out in-house
  • Minimum involvement from ILM can speed up the assessment procedure in-house
