Progression

The unitised structure of ILM qualifications is designed to make it easier for learners to continue with their development by progressing onto additional qualifications. There are four main pathways of progression for the successful candidate to consider:

  • Deepen your learning by moving to a larger qualification at the same level – building on your award to gain a certificate, or your certificate to earn a diploma. (Remember, credits gained in the smaller qualification are carried forward to the larger qualification at the same level, so you are already part way towards that qualification.)
  • Extend your learning by gaining a qualification in a different aspect of your role, at the same or a higher level. For example, you can add a leadership qualification to your management qualification, to develop your all round capabilities in the role, or you can gain a coaching and mentoring qualification, to be able to take on new responsibilities in your role
  • Develop your career by moving up to a higher level qualification to prepare yourself for promotion. It is always sensible to develop yourself fully at your current level before moving to a higher level, but it makes sense to be trained in a new role before starting it, not after you have made mistakes!
  • Build on your credit by transferring it to another qualification. Increasing numbers of universities are offering exemptions or advance standing on their undergraduate and post-graduate qualifications, based on the credits you have earned on your ILM qualification.
