Senior managers risk alienating their staff by retreating into their shells during the recession, a new study has warned.
Research by Right Management has revealed that just half of UK workers feel senior leaders at their firm are not "visible to staff".
It also revealed that a third of respondents do not think senior managers lead by example.
Jayne Carrington, managing director of Right Management, called on business leaders to ensure problems relating to the recession do not distract them from other issues.
"It is the leaders who inspire and engage their staff who will help their companies adapt and survive in difficult markets. They do need to be visible and lead by example," she said.
The fact that UK managers came tenth out of the 15 nations surveyed means the situation might even damage the country's competitiveness, Ms Carrington added.
Recently, a study by the Institute of Leadership & Management and Management Today magazine revealed that a third of UK workers have little or no trust in their boss.
