It was also revealed that of these individuals, 30 are bank employees, while the average total remuneration of people on the list was £225,990 per year, or £4,700 a week.

There were eight people working in the public sector earning a salary of over £1 million, compared with four the previous year.

The number of people earning over £500,000 and £250,000 per annum also grew, from 21 to 35 and from 88 to 120 respectively.

Regarding pay rises, the average reward received by people with remuneration for 2007-08 and 2008-09 was 5.4%, compared to 2.7% for nurses and 2.3% for teachers.

John O'Connell, policy analyst at the TaxPayers' Alliance, said that the findings show executive pay in the public sector is "completely divorced from the reality of Britain's fiscal crisis".

"All parties now agree that excessive pay packages must be tackled but the time for action is now, not next year. Taxpayers want genuine transparency, accountability and restraint in setting top public sector pay," he added.

The Daily Telegraph reports that prime minister Gordon Brown has said any public sector salary above £150,000 will now need formal ministerial approval.
