ILM Brings New Flexibility to Leadership Training
15 June 2007
The Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) is pleased to announce that from September this year all ILM Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs) in management and leadership will be unitised. This means that for the first time, UK businesses will have the flexibility to custom build bespoke courses to meet the specific development needs of their leadership and management teams.
Rather than opting for an off-the-shelf solution which only partially fulfills their needs, employers across all sectors and industries will now be able to design leadership and management training courses tailored to the specific demands of their business. ILM offers a wide range of topic-based units covering both core and specialist areas of management e.g. Effective meetings for managers, Managing stress in the workplace, Marketing for managers etc.
ILM is the first awarding body in the UK to offer a unitised portfolio, a move which is in direct response to industry feedback and in anticipation of the emerging UK credit frameworks. The unitisation of ILM's VRQs has been welcomed by the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales who have recognised the proposed ILM credit ratings. Each unit has a credit value (one credit is approximately 10 notional learning hours) and these can contribute towards an Award, a Certificate or a Diploma at the same level. This means that it will be easier to accumulate credits and thus progress to a more advanced qualification e.g. from an Award to a Certificate without having to repeat units.
In addition, ILM has taken the opportunity to streamline its processes and introduce a fully revised quality assurance strategy thereby reducing paperwork and administration for its approved centres (colleges/universities, private trainers and major employers), with tailored support and monitoring.
June Hawkins, Director of Qualifications & Learning Support at ILM said:
'As the largest provider of management qualifications in Europe, ILM is delighted to be pioneering this new level of flexibility for managers and leaders who want to improve their skills. Learning in topic-based, bite-sized chunks with the ability to carry completed credits across qualifications at the same level will make it easier than ever to continue learning throughout your career.'
Initial feedback has been very positive.
Gareth Davis, management training provider at Bespoke Training said:
'We applaud ILM for making this bold move forward with unitisation - it opens amazing new possibilities for management development and will meet the needs of both learners and employers. This is a huge leap in terms of flexibility and the new system makes it simpler to access the most relevant training quickly and easily, then carry it with you if you want to progress further.'
Robin Lodge, director of People Development Team said:
'Unitisation offers a superb opportunity for us and, more importantly, our clients. We already have a range of unitised products in place and we have an Award in Management using both face-to-face and e-learning starting in Dublin from September. The versatility of the new set up enables much more flexibility and is already being well received by our clients.'
