ILM Celebrates Outstanding Management

UK’s Largest Management Body Announces ILM Learners of The Year

Learner of the Year 2015

23rd September 2015, ILM has recognised the impact of outstanding leadership by revealing its 5 learners of the year, at the Kia Oval Cricket ground London. Now in their 8th year, the awards celebrate the transformational role that ILM qualifications have in unleashing the leadership potential of employees across the workplace.


Learner of the Year 2015This year Alan Harris from the Wythenshawe Community Housing Group took the top spot after being selected as the ILM Learner of the Year. Alan started off his career working as a grass cutter, but in two short years has progressed to a management role. He made the move into management, after completing an ILM Level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management.

Charles Elvin, Chief Executive of the Institute of Leadership & Management, said: “Alan’s success demonstrates the impact of workplace based qualifications both at an individual and wider team level. Outstanding training brings out the best in learners, but also has a great knock on effect in teams, organisations and communities. Today is a celebration not only of these five winners but also of those 90,000 people who embark on an ILM qualification every year”

Other awards were granted to:

  • Lisa Riddington, Library Manager, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Lisa won the England ILM Learner of the Year after completing an ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership. Her new strategy has led to higher levels of engagement with a 23% increase in literature searches and a 33% increase in book loans. 
  • Noora Al Marzooqi, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company who won ILM International Learner of the Year. Noora recently completed an ILM level 3 Diploma in Leadership & Management and is the first female national from the company to have achieved an ILM Diploma while working full time.  
  • Tony Atkins, Pump Court Chambers who was commended for the England ILM Learner of the Year award. During the course of completing his ILM level 5 Diploma in Leadership & Management Tony was promoted to Deputy Chief Clerk. His work has been instrumental in helping his Chambers consolidate its position as a ‘leading set’ in both Legal 500 and also Chambers and Partners. 
  • Jane Shaddick-Brady, Dubai English Speaking School who was highly commended for the International Learner of the Year award, Jane completed the ILM Level 7 Certificate in Executive Coaching and Mentoring in 2014 and has since been promoted to deputy head - teacher. Since her promotion Jane has developed the coaching and the transfer of knowledge throughout the school. 26 staff have now taken the ILM Level 3 Award in Coaching.
