“Why would I do this?” – hesitated Claire when the company she had been working at for seven years, a leader in the energy industry in the Cayman Islands, enrolled her in an ILM Level 5 Leadership and Management qualification. With a degree in Law and an MBA under her belt, it felt like an ILM qualification would have nothing significantly new to add to her skills set. She couldn’t be more mistaken, as she realised a few months later.
“Before the ILM course, my idea of a leader was one of a sterile person, who has it all under control. Now I’ve realised that it’s okay to be human. What I’ve learned is so practical, so pragmatic, and helped me to think deeper, from a more emotionally intelligent perspective. It’s allowed me to be more me and helped develop my relationship with the people I work with. Certainly they have noticed a dramatic change in the way I interact with others,” says Claire with a smile.
Claire, Corporate Compliance Manager for Caribbean Utilities Company, took an ILM Level 5 in Leadership and Management
Claire is not the only successful ILM alumni in her organisation. Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd (CUC) has recently invested in qualifications for several of their employees at all levels in the organisation, starting from its supervisors and departmental managers at ILM Level 3 to senior leaders at ILM Level 5 in Leadership and Management.
Joshua, Planning Supervisor at CUC, has also utilised the skills the ILM course provided him with. Earlier this year, Joshua was promoted and he became the leader of the team he was previously part of.
Joshua has been recently appointed Planning Supervisor, so the ILM Level 3 in Leadership and Management served his immediate development needs
This new role brought new challenges, so ILM came at a very good time. In previous positions, I’ve witnessed situations where sudden changes in management result in low team spirit. With ILM, I’ve acquired some great tools to help me increase, maintain and promote a healthy and positive team environment.
Joshua has now started designing his own leadership model, which he is testing out every day at work: “For me great leadership is all about keeping a positive and inspiring team atmosphere and giving people a fair amount of responsibility and opportunity to perform at their best. Every day I challenge myself to keep improving as a leader. I also draw inspiration from one of my previous mentors. She was always there to encourage the team, even when we were completing the smallest of tasks and had such a great effect. Now I want to lead in a similar fashion.”
Ray, Engineering & Business Development Manager, found ILM Level 5 in Leadership and Management very hands-on
For Ray, Engineering & Business Development Manager at CUC, who, like Claire, completed an ILM Level 5 qualification in Leadership and Management, it was the mentors who gave him the most challenging tasks. With 33 years of international experience in the energy sector, Ray had previously undertaken three other different leadership and management courses. Drawing from his experience and knowledge of leadership education, Ray identified ILM’s greatest attribute:
Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd collaborated with Management Solutions (Approved ILM centre) for the delivery of these qualifications. Management Solutions is based in Bermuda and the United Kingdom.
What I particularly liked about the ILM course was that it forced me to apply its learnings to my current role. There were no practical assignments in the previous courses which I took. The ILM assignments gave me the flexibility to explore how I could really make the most of what the ILM was teaching me in the workplace further.
