When should off-the-job training take place?
The key to ensuring that off-the-job training works, for not only the employer but the apprentice as well, is planning. We suggest that you agree in advance with training providers precisely what that 20% off-the-job component will consist of.
Every employer will have a preferred method of structuring the use of the apprentice’s time, so what this looks like will vary for each employer. By writing a training programme into the apprentice’s contract, the delivery of the off-the-job element will be agreed in advance and leave no space for contention later.
Measurement is essential
Measurement of the requirement is an essential part of the apprenticeship. It needs to be monitored to ensure that it is strictly conducted during employment time. If training happens to take place outside of normal working hours, it would need to be recognised in the form of time off in lieu.
When training is undertaken (by the choice of the apprentice) outside of paid employment, and essentially outside of the apprenticeship, these hours cannot be counted towards the 20% requirement.
Deciding at what point to deliver the training during the apprenticeship is up to the training provider and employer. This would be based on a number of factors, including, what is best for the apprentice and the organisation; and the technical or theoretical requirement of the apprenticeship standard.
Explore the options available
With many varied models of delivery available including attending weekly training at centres; ‘day release’ models; a set block of time at a training centre or an allocated hour a day for training activities, the most important thing to remember is that the apprentice spend a minimum of 20% of their paid time in off-the-job training.
