What is End Point Assessment?

End Point Assessment is one of the biggest changes happening to apprenticeships right now. The End Point Assessment (EPA) takes place on completion of an apprentice's programme of learning, and is a comprehensive holistic assessment of their skills and knowledge against the criteria laid out in the apprenticeship standard.

ILM’s highly experienced team of End Point Assessors use the latest digital technologies to rigorously assess managers’ skills and knowledge against the Trailblazer Apprenticeship Standards that we helped to create. We have been approved to offer End Point Assessment for both the Level 3 and Level 5 management apprenticeships, with Level 6 CMDA EPA in development.

Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor EPA

What is involved in Level 3 End Point Assessment?
  • 20% portfolio of work - a mixture of written documents, audio and video evidence that showcases the professional application of their on-programme learning.
  • 30% online knowledge test - the apprentice showcases their leadership and management knowledge by answering a series of questions, explaining how they would respond to a range of different scenarios. Assessed via online on-demand testing through the evolve platform.
  • 30% competency based interview - a one-to-one interview with the apprentice, using structured questions to test their understanding and application of knowledge, and to assess their soft skills, behaviours and personal leadership style.
  • 20% professional discussion - the ILM assessor leads a detailed discussion around the apprentice’s personal and professional development, looking for clear evidence of focused CPD and how this has been applied to improve their performance in the workplace.

Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager EPA

What is involved in Level 5 End Point Assessment?
  • 20% portfolio of work - mixture of written documents, audio and video evidence that showcases the professional application of their on-programme learning.
  • 20% work-based presentation - a 15-minute presentation to a panel made up of the independent assessor, training provider and employer, describing the objectives and outputs of their work-based project, including the challenges and issues faced, and the interpersonal and behavioural skills they displayed, followed by a 15 minute Q&A.
  • 30% online knowledge test - the apprentice showcases their leadership and management knowledge by answering a series of questions, explaining how they would respond to a range of different scenarios. Assessed via online on-demand testing through the evolve platform.
  • 20% competency based interview - a one-to-one interview with the apprentice, using structured questions to test their understanding and application of knowledge, and to assess their soft skills, behaviours and personal leadership style.
  • 10% professional discussion - the ILM assessor leads a detailed discussion around the apprentice’s personal and professional development, looking for clear evidence of focused CPD and how this has been applied to improve their performance in the workplace.

Grading

End Point Assessment gradingAcross all assessments, the apprentice will be marked based on:

  • Evidence of their performance against the requirements of the job role
  • Their approach to work and learning, and completion of set tasks
  • The working relationships they have built, and evidence of their interpersonal skills.

Apprentices must gain a minimum of 50% in each of the four assessments in order to pass the overall assessment. They can achieve a grade of either pass, merit or distinction.

Digital first End Point Assessment services

Being part of City & Guilds, ILM enjoys access to the latest technologies to enable learning and assessment.  ILM’s End Point Assessment service will be digital first, using remote meetings software to enable streamlined face-to-face assessment for both professional discussions and competency-based interviews (face to face interviews are also available).

Knowledge and skills will be assessed using City & Guilds proven and popular Evolve platform, ensuring prompt feedback and results. Plus, all apprentices will receive an ILM Digital Credential on successful completion of their ILM End Point Assessment, showcasing their skills and knowledge for the digital economy.
