Essential Skills Wales

Please note:
These are the old Essential Skills Wales qualifications that were closed to new starts on 31 December 2015.

Late registrations for this qualification have been considered on a case by case basis but with effect from 31 August 2016 it will not be possible to consider any further late registrations.

Last certification for 3768 qualifications will be 31 December 2016.

The revised qualifications (3868) are available for first teaching from 1 September 2015.

For further information about the changes to Essential Skills Wales, please visit our separate Essential Skills support webpage.

Fundamental to the skills agenda in Wales, Essential Skills qualifications enable learners to develop their knowledge and application of number, communication, and ICT skills. The Essential Skills qualifications help learners demonstrate that they can apply these vital skills to a range of situations whilst at work, in further learning and throughout life in general.

Essential Skills for Work and Life (Wales)

Enable learners in Wales to develop their communication, number and ICT skills through a flexible and personalised learning programme. Developed in conjunction with the Welsh Government, these qualifications complement and support progression towards the Essential Skills Wales (ESW) qualifications (3768).

The qualifications contain a wide range of small (1-3 credit) units at Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3 and Level 1, each aligned to the Essential Skills evidence and knowledge requirements. Like the Essential Skills Wales qualifications, these units focus on problem solving and the application of these skills, although the crucial difference with these qualifications is they allow learners to address specific skills gaps and build confidence in the particular skills they need to improve (eg Strategies for Reading, Using Fractions, Developing and Presenting Information Using ICT), without necessarily having to evidence the whole of the standard. They also allow communication, number and ICT skills to be integrated - as they are in real life.

Mathematics and English Skills
